This was my first game and Brady was showing me the ropes more or less though i had some idea what was going on. Im not sure im a big fan of guys being able to pick the deployment and table edge while placing objectives but i digress. My list was based around the new emperor himself Roboute Guilliman and his ability to let units of ultramarines within 6 inches re-roll to hit AND wound, insane. Per my detachments rules i took 3 heavy weapons squads which were had a mix of 6 lascannon and 6 missle launcher in each and set them up around the Primarch. I rounded out my force with 7 sniper rifle scouts to act as a screen, the scout special character to let my scouts hit on 2s was included, 2 full ten man squads with a grav cannon and plasma gun in rhinos, sternguard in a razorback with 3 special weapons, and my near mvp the eversor assassin.
I wasnt sure exactly all the rules when i deployed but we knew brady was going first so i set up my screen the best i could knowing magnus and helldrake could both prolly first turn charge. I thought i did a poor job in hindsight but was saved by a sieze the initiative, something that happens alot when i play him. On my now bottom of turn 1 i mass shot his helldrake and finished it, than chipped in heavy damage on both his rhinos, while some shooting was directed at magnus he remained unscathed, during this turn i also adjusted my units a bit to give me proper spacing and whatnot for his inevitable consolidate moves after magnus gets stuck in. The assassin also started a couple turn beatdown of a squad of cultists on an objective.
Turned out i shouldnt have worried as though magnus came right in my face and smited an entire heavy weapons squad into thin air, he failed his charges and was sitting in the open infront of 1500 points of shooty ultarmarines with re-rolls. The rest of his army advanced. On the bottom of turn 2 i finished the cultists with the assassin and charged his hurt rhino, it did take 4/5 of my army shooting him, but magnus was slain on this turn, my few remaining shots starting in on one of his 2 packs of 10 dogs closing fast and screening his princes. Bottom of turn 2 he got stuck in with his 7 man bike squad vs a squad of 5 basic marines and i ended up tieing them up for effectively 3 player turns. The injured squad of dogs and a demon prince charge one of my rhinos and surrounded it so i couldnt leave combat and shoot them, while his other dogs charged my second rhino and his second prince was out of charge range.
On what was to be my last turn as we had other players waiting to play vs Brady, i ended up getting Rouboute to charge his prince locked in combat with one rhino and wiped it out, than had a couple missle launcher squads and my sternguard charge his dogs and slowly kill them over 2 player turns. on the other table side i was able to wipe out a full squad of dogs from shooting when my rhino left combat. With dwindling numbers and no real chance get stuck in combat and avoid another full round of shooting, we called it.
I actually had fun, i think Brady was a bit down when i siezed (because its brutal), and was down on his list a bit, but had i not got lucky on the sieze, its a completely different game. I think if anything i need to adjsut my list to be better prepared for him enxtime, maybe lose my the sniper sargent and getting a on foot chapter master to help when the combat starts. My chapter ancient which allows slain models to get a shot off on a 4+ when they die, didnt get to be used at all as he had limited shooting and it dosnt work in combat. Roboute is a beast for 360, but the game was really decided on the sieze and my hot rolls for my assassins 4+ invul in particular i thought.
Girlymans rerolls are nuts. He (pretty much) won the game by himself technically, 3 groups of dev's and snipers and tacticals and razorbacks (basically the whole army) re-rolling EVERYTHING was so nuts. Magnus only does re-rolls of 1 to hit and 1s for saves, not nearly as good as re-roll everything but also a lot of magnus's power lies in Close Combat and the Psychic phase. I can see a list like this or similar to it being the standard for space marines now because it was sooooo damn strong. BUT, I think the list does have some weaknesses which I will try to tackle next week when we play again. But with all that said, it was a fun game - It was the first game in about a year that I lost (if you don't count my 2 losses during my tournament), and I'm not going to lie but the "reroll everthing" from girlyman made me a bit salty because without it I think even with the seize and failed charges I would of had a much better chance at winning - even if it was only rerolling 1's I think I would of been fine, but then again the Dice Gods can be cruel so I can't say this as a certainty. But with all that said, it was a good game with tactical errors made by both sides, and extremely good luck on one side (stupid smurfs), shooting armies aren't as bad as people think.
Also as a side note, I think Cheifs army list wasn't calculated properly because the way you make a list is different in 8th than it was in 7th. I think he accidentally got to bring a bit more than he should of because (I think) he forgot to pay for the basic wargear his guys start with (pistols, swords, boltguns, stormbolters on rhinos) - it says on the points cost in the back that basic wargear isn't included in the points and that you have to calculate it, I was even building my lists wrong until I was informed today (I thought my flying demon prince was only 170 points, but apparently you have to pay for the sword HE COMES WITH which is like 60 points, effectively making the models base cost 220 which is much different than what it states at the back). I could be wrong about this but my horde army was slightly smaller than his "elite" army so I think there was something wrong in the points, but again I could be wrong since I didn't really look into it - the army just happened to look a lot bigger than I thought it would.
EDIT: I re-built the Ultra Marine list in battlescribe as best as I could remember, and it seems to be around 2000k points, so I think the list was made correctly and even if it wasn't the points difference wouldn't of been too much.
ya i definetly paid extra points for wargear, like the sniper rifles are all 4 points each or the power swords 4 aswell. Some stuff was free like boltguns on the tacticals or the chainsword on my ancient. I wouldnt call your army a horde though in any way, 62 models isnt really a horde, i had 55 models and agree that i had an elite style army though. I think a horde would have to start at 100 models, but who knows it can vary person to person.
