I been looking around at painted armies on the interwebs...mainly armies on parade type photos from larger tournaments and events. What an amazing site it would be to see some of these up close and personal! There's something to be said about seeing a fully painted force. I love looking at details and conversions and my mind races imagining fluff of these models as if they were real... Battle display boards for events telling a story. ..This scar from a genestealer nearly costed a valiant marines life or this hull damage from a land raider didn't stop it blazing up the field of glory in a hailstorm of bullets. It's amazing and on the table top it adds a lot. I've played my last few games which has been the longest without a painted force I've ever had, my oppenents have had the same lack luster primer and plastic forces. No offense to any of them as I am the exact same state but it isn't a great gaming photo for a battle report when it's grey tide vs grey armoured assaut. For me the Gaming is only half the hobby and the painting/fluff is the other half. I started a Painting challenge to pump myself up by having goals others know about. Then there's something there to not completing goals as I can be shamed or flayed or something. Hopefully others join up and it becomes a monthly tradition and the % of models done increases on my end and others. http://itoysoldiers.com/forum-post/june-painting-goals is the link if anyone is interested. Locally that might amount to enough finished armies to perhaps go to events as a group or have campaigns of painted forces. It would be an amazing thing to see my friends armies on parade inspiring others down the road.
