So Echo played an infantry heavy alpha legion list using the new chaos book that came out today. Exception of forgefiend, helbrute and a rhino, everything was infantry. I brought a list I wanted to use for later tournaments.
So I deployed everything first and he used the stratagem for the alpha legion to deploy before the 1st turn 20 khorne berserkers next to my tantalus. He then seized the initiative and just that die roll alone made me feel like I had lost the game. Turn one, the berserkers move up 6", 3" away from the tantalus. The warp talons drop and he casts warp time on them. I didn't take too much shooting damage but after combat he killed the tantalus and ravager and had berserkers tying up my scourges and wave serpent for the dark reapers. His berserkers fought 3 times. He used a stratagem for +1 to wound that phase and then the strategm to attack an extra time on the berserkers when they were in range of the wave serpent. They killed the tantalus after their second attack but since the fight phase was over before he could use his stratagem they did minimal damage to the serpent.
I won the maelstrom game on the backs of my dark reapers. They killed the 20 berserkers, the rhino for the chosen, the chosen themselves and 20 noise marines and and this was by the end of turn 3. They did so much work that it allowed me to come back. Echo didn't get good maelstrom objectives and I started to gain a lead by the time most of his army was dead. With that seize and thirty marines bottling up my army i really thought it was over but dark reapers definitely get mvp. They had a small LOS blocking terrain they used to hide from the noise marines and most enemy shooting allowing them to act with little repercussion.
It was a great game from Echo who I thought made a good list capitalizing some of the strengths the alpha legion had and I'm sure with some tweaks he could get quite the strong up front list going.
