The Kabal of the Malfean Dawn
To the Lords, Generals, esteemed collegues in the Collegia Tactica, I present this humble treatise on the known history and methods of warfare utilized by the piratical Eldar [cult/sect/faction] known as the Kabal of the Malfean Dawn and their apparent allies the Midnight Sorrow, an enigmatic – to be sure – faction associated with the so-called Harlequin Eldar.
I am indebted to a number of august personalities in the compilation of this treatise and whilst I am certain that I will exclude a number of those worthy of mention I would be remise if I failed to attempt to catalog the numerous individuals and agencies that have contributed to this document. Without their recorded testimony, tireless service to the Imperium of Man, and timely involvement in numerous incidents it would have been impossible for me to have completed this complete and canonical account of this scourge to Mankind. In particular I would like to thank the Conclave of the Xenos Biologis amongst the Adeptus Mechanicus who have cataloged the vast and seemingly random attacks of the Eldar and in particular the works of the esteemed Arlon Pere.
500 years ago a major threat to the Imperium was driven into Labryinth dimension by a Khornate host. It is with a great deal of hesitation that I present the hypothesis that this threat has returned with a new name, The Kabal of the Malfean Dawn.
Early in M40, a Xenos invasion into Imperial territory was identified. Unlike many other threats, this Xenos, a force of piratical Eldar raiders was not intent on claiming territory. Its primary focus was on the capture of Imperial citizens as slaves. Imperial survivors of the attacks reported that the Xenos went by the label of the Kabal of the Malebranche. For decades, this force – led by a cruel and enigmatic Archon known as Ardat-lile pillaged the Imperium. Until they were eventual targeted by a Khornate war host intent on destroying the Kabal.
The Kabal was herded deep into the Halo stars before contact was lost. It was assumed that the Kabal was routed or at least neutralized as a threat.
I present the following information to support the hypothesis that the Kabal of the Malebranche has returned from the Halo stars under a new banner and as an even more dire threat.
Fifteen years ago a Kabalite raiding party ambushed and depopulated the garrison on Arbor Tine, an agricultural world situated in the Scarus Sector – close to the region of space known as the Halo Stars. This Kabalite force deployed from ships that match energy signatures of those utilized by the Malebranche.
There is evidence that suggests the commander of this Kabalite force is known as Ardat-Lile, and whilst this creature has yet to be seen in the field it is well known that the Eldar are a vain race and it would be uncharacteristic for them to adopt the name of another commander.
In many of their attacks, particularly those of excessive violence, a single survivor is allowed to live – albeit horribly maimed and only sane enough to recount what they’ve witnessed.
My collegues and I consider this information to be sufficient to identify this Kabalite war band as a return of the Malebranche, which is a distressing thought, for their leader, Ardat-lile is cruel and cunning and is inimical to human life.
The question is raised: How did the Malfean Dawn escape the Khornate warband? Why have they been absent from the galaxy for so long? It has been considered canon that this type of Eldar is forced to feed regularly upon the suffering of others for some esoteric reason. How have they been sustaining themselves. Obviously, based upon their recent predations, it is not a sussation of their need.
The answer may lie in their apparent alliance with the Harlequin Eldar of the Masque of Midnight Sorrow. This particular sect has a particular hatred of the forces of Chaos. It is possible that the Harlequins either saved the Kabalites from their fate or have joined them at a later junction. It is likely that a true answer to this will never be known but the result of this alliance is a significant threat to the safety of citizens of the Imperium within the Segmentum Pacificus.
Forces of the Malfean Dawn
Herein lies a summary of known forces at the disposal of the Kabal of the Malfean Dawn. Whilst by no means exhaustive or all inclusive – an impossible task when cataloging the Eldar, it does provide a general threat assessment of these Kabalites. The Emperor protects.
A master combatant who has yet to fail his mistress, Ardat-Lile. It is rumored that ha-Mavet orchestrated the ruse that gutted the fighting forces of the Space Wolves during the Scourge of Cardinal III.
Well known for his contempt for psykers of all races, the warp roils in a tempest around him. ha-Mavet delights in tormenting the psykers and forcing them to fall prey to their own powers.
